Company News >> AMOLED production capacity rises rapidly 25th,Feb,2019
Recently, the South Korean media ET News reported that Jingdong will become a supplier of flexible OLED screens for Apple. This means that after Samsung Display and LG Display, BOE is likely to become Apple's third screen supplier. According to the report, according to industry sources, BOE has obtained the qualification of supplier and has not yet entered the actual panel supply. Although it has obtained the certification of Apple, it still takes a lot of time to deliver.

In this regard, the BOE official did not respond to the outside, a BOE executive told the 21st Century Business Herald reporter that he was not aware of the matter.

In fact, BOE has already entered Apple's supply chain for LCD panels, providing screens for Apple's tablets. Although BOE's small and medium-sized flexible AMOLED has been mass-produced, it also indicates that the yield of the sixth-generation flexible AMOLED production line in Chengdu has exceeded 70%, but the yield and production capacity are still climbing. There are also challenges in meeting the technical needs of large mobile phones such as Apple.

Since last week, the concept of flexible screen has been hot, and BOE's share price has also risen sharply. However, it should be pointed out that the folding screen is a kind of flexible screen, and the application prospect is full of controversy. Whether Samsung or BOE, there is no energy production now, and the reliability of the screen life has yet to be broken.

Plus flexible screen capacity

The wave of the last wave of flexible screens occurred in 2016-2017, when Apple decided to use AMOLED screens, which caused market attention. In the past two years, Samsung is still the boss in the market structure of AMOLED, and Chinese panel companies have begun to exert their strength. BOE is one of the representatives. After the first year of LCD panel shipments stabilized, it invested heavily in the AMOLED production line.

According to the statistics of the 21st Century Business Herald, BOE plans to build and have 14 production lines, most of which are liquid crystal panel production lines. There will be 5 production lines related to AMOLED. The main force of mass production is the 6th generation flexibility of Chengdu. The AMOLED production line is also part of the 5.5th generation LTPS/AMOLED production line in Erdos (mainly producing rigid AMOLED).

In addition, two are still under construction. The sixth generation of flexible AMOLED production line in Mianyang is expected to be mass-produced by the end of 2019. The sixth-generation AMOLED (flexible) production line in Chongqing will only begin construction in 2018. In addition, BOE also plans to invest 46.5 billion yuan in Fuzhou to build the 6th generation AMOLED production line.

Unlike many panel companies that are rooted in a city, BOE has established industrial parks in Beijing, Chongqing, Chengdu, Erdos, and Fuzhou. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is beneficial to reduce the construction cost in a region, but it is beneficial to obtain more resources in various regions.

Next, look at the vendor's market position from the shipment of AMOLED mobile phone screens (including rigid and flexible) in 2018.

According to the data provided by Qunzhi Consulting, the top 6 AMOLED small and medium-sized shipments in 2018 are Samsung's SDC, LG's LGD, GVO (Guo Xian Optoelectronics), BOE (BOE), EDO (and Huiguang), and Shen Tianma. .

Among them, SDC is in the first place with an absolute advantage of 400 million pieces, and LGD is around 10 million pieces. Domestic companies have not yet reached the order of tens of millions, and the shipments of Guoxian Optoelectronics are 8.5 million, and that of BOE is about 5.5 million. Although the total amount of BOE is not as good as Guoxian Optoelectronics, but the flexible AMOLED aspect of BOE took the lead in mass production.

According to incomplete statistics, by 2020, there will be more than 13 AMOLED production lines planned for mass production in China. Of course, there may be delays or transitions. In 2019, there will be 6 new AMOLED production lines planned for mass production. In addition to the 6th generation line of Mianyang Mianyang, there are Hehui Shanghai Sixth Generation Line, Weixin Nuo'an Sixth Generation Line, Rouyu Shenzhen Five Generations and Half Line, Huaxing Optoelectronics. Wuhan Sixth Generation Line, Xinli Anhui Sixth Generation Line, etc.

Folding screen challenge

From the perspective of Samsung and LG constantly closing the LCD panel factory and investing in OLED technology, OLED flexible technology has become a trend. According to LGD's plan, it is estimated that by 2020, 120 billion yuan will be used for OLED research and development. Domestic AMOLED production line funds have also exceeded 100 billion.

Domestic flexible screen production capacity has increased rapidly. Previously, Li Yaqin, general manager of Qunzhi Consulting, told the 21st Century Business Herald: "Flexible AMOLEDs will be surplus in the next two years, because the flexible market has grown, but the cost and pricing of end products are too high, so the scale of product growth is relatively slow. However, the production capacity has increased substantially. Although Samsung stopped expanding production, A5 has been delayed indefinitely, but the domestic expansion is still very fast, so the contradiction between supply and demand is very obvious."

The release of the folding screen mobile phone this week can be seen as the second stage of the development of the flexible market.

In Li Yaqin's view, the folding screen market in 2019 is not very optimistic. The sales of folding mobile phones are small, and there is no folding screen mass production. It is still from the stage of nothing. “The cost is definitely very high, and it is expected to be more than 15,000. Pricing." From the price of mobile phones that Samsung just released, it is indeed very high-end, starting at 13,000 yuan.

Zhang Yu, senior vice president of BOE, told the 21st Century Business Herald: "In 2019, BOE will have two flexible production lines in Chengdu and Mianyang. By then, our flexible screen will have more than 10 million pieces of production per year, close to 20 million pieces. Among them, the folding screen is expected to be in the order of millions." In his view, the terminal price will at least double.

For BOE, Li Yaqin said: "On the mobile phone side, BOE has just entered the high-end panel. The current shipment size is still small, but it is expected to become a major player in the flexible panel of mobile phones by 2020, 2019. It is still at a stage of capacity expansion and stable shipments, capacity expansion."

However, the material and supply chain of the folding screen are not mature. Li Yaqin pointed out that the folding screen has very high requirements for the reliability of the material. In addition to the screen itself, especially the touch screen technology is difficult. Samsung uses On Cell technology (On Cell refers to a technology that uses a touch sensor on the panel), and BOE will also use On Cell technology. The challenge of this technology is how to make the screen flexible, scratch-resistant and fall-resistant. .

A panel insider told the 21st Century Business Herald that the reliability of the folding screen will increase and the price will come down. The future market prospects will be good. The reliability of flexibility includes life, number of folds, and the like. At present, Samsung, BOE and Rouyu all say that their folding screen can resist 200,000 times of folding. For the replacement cycle, the number is enough, and the consumer's attitude depends on the next sales performance.
